Liam McCarthy
Laboratory Analyst
Liam studied biochemistry at the University of Kent for his undergraduate, before moving into industry and working as a laboratory analyst and team leader in a high throughput forensic laboratory for almost four years. Prior to joining the NVRL in 2022, he returned to university at Strathclyde in Glasgow to study an MSc in Biomedical Engineering, with a research project focussed on the design of a tissue engineered scaffold for growing blood vessels.
In his role as Laboratory Analyst for the NVRL, Liam is responsible for performing the diagnostic testing for viral diseases including Bluetongue virus, African horse sickness virus, African Swine Fever virus, Capripox viruses, Epizootic haemorrhagic disease virus and Peste des petits ruminants virus. He also helps to maintain the lab’s ISO17025 accreditation status, supports the day-to-day running of the NVRL within High Containment and assists with research projects.
